It had been weeks since I'd last seen Rio. Truth be told I was avoiding him. The mechanic had long since diagnosed my car problems (it turns out that putting diesel in your non-diesel tank is not a good idea) but I didn't currently have the money to get it fixed so I was off the hook for driving Elly to and from her band practice, which she engaged in at least three times a week. She never mentioned Rio when we talked and I never asked. I didn't want her to know how far I'd fallen with him and I didn't want to know if he'd moved on since then. I certainly hadn't. He was all I could think about and every corner I turned I swore I saw him, but it was never him.
I finished up my makeup and pressed my lips together to make sure the lipstick was even before I moved away from the bathroom mirror and gathered my purse. Even tonight I was thinking of him as I readied myself for the concert I had casually mentioned to him. My phone remained silent so I figured whatever had been going on with him and Annie was on again, not off again.
Elly called me and I headed downstairs. I smiled at the taxi parked on the curb and took a peek to confirm it was her before I got in. I saw her face but the other hiding in the darkness was a complete surprise.
"Kent?"
He flashed me an innocent smile from the middle seat. "Hey Stacy. Hope you don't mind my crashing the girls' night."
"Um, no, I guess not. We aren't getting makeovers, we're going to a concert."
I wanted to give Elly a look and a slap on arm for allowing this to happen but she was safely on the other side of Kent and not looking at me. I got in, shut the door and placed my purse in my lap. The taxi lurched forward without much warning throwing me against the door. I grabbed onto the side handlebar and ignored the pain until it subsided when Kent got his bearings and moved back to his seat.
"I'm so excited!" Elly said, her shoulders bobbing up and down.
"Me too," Kent said. I watched in silence as Kent's hand moved to Elly's knee. She smiled at Kent and plucked his hand from her knee and put it back into his own lap.
It was my turn to smile. Good for her. Somewhat sticking to her boundaries.
"How is married life?" I asked Kent.
Kent grinned, "Oh, it's pretty much the same. Except for this." He pointed to the golden ring on his finger.
"You'll probably attract more women with that thing on, you know."
He blushed and politely shook his head. "Nah. The girls don't pay me any attention."
Elly scoffed as she gazed out her window at the scenery passing us by. "More like you don't pay them any attention."
"What can I say?" he said, "I have all the ladies I need already.
